Language Variation and Technology in the classroom

Out of both of the classes I sit in on there are only 3 language learners or bilingual I am not quite sure what exactly the case is for each of these students. But I haven’t noticed anything to extreme in any of these students which would hinder them from keeping up with class and actually learning the material which is being taught. I am also in a Smart class room which I feel has been very beneficial to the students. Every day Mrs. D starts the class off with planner entries on the smart board for the students to copy down in their planners which will be check randomly and periodically throughout the year. This is a great use of technology I feel because she is not only telling the class what they are doing she has it written down so if the students are not listening then they have a visual layout what they will be doing in class and what us assigned for homework. Mrs. D also uses the smart board to do grammar every Monday. She will put up 3 sentences on the board and have students come up and fix the errors on the board and explain why they fixed what they did. I find this to be a very useful tool because I feel that it is important for the students to not only be able to mark and correct grammar but to be able to verbally explain grammatical rules is key in fully understanding grammar. The class also participates is a computer base program called “Teen Biz” which they do in the classroom on the computer every Friday. I feel that the integration of technology in this classroom is great and I feel that it is an advantage for these students to not only hear, but to see what is being taught to them. Students learn in so many different ways and this technology makes it easier for the teacher to reach more students. I haven’t seen any negative aspects of technology use in the class room at this point, but I have noticed it has help students more than hurt them.

  1. I like this idea of using the smart board for teaching grammar. I can see how that technology would be very useful. I also like the idea of Teen Biz...do the students like the Teen Biz? Do they seem motivated more to participate in that particular assignment? Curious to know what you have observed as I think that involving kids in that type activity would be a great way to keep kids writing and excited about writing.

  2. I haven’t seen the kids use teen biz but from what I understand and have heard from the teacher is that a lot of students don’t finish it so their overall grade for the class has suffered. I do like the use of the smart board in class I have seen kids who have already gotten their participation point for the semester still raising their hands because they want to go up to the board and work out the grammatical errors in the sentences. I feel that there is a lot more class participation when using the smart board and I think it is a great interaction tool for the students.

  3. WOW! Your teacher seems to utilize technology quite a bit! Smartboards are so amazing to me! I love that she utilizes the technology in consistent ways instead of just sporadically using technology. I believe that this probably gives the students some confidence in understanding and using the technology themselves. I too think that the use of technology is probably very beneficial in your classroom environment. Do you think that technology is essential for the learners of today who are so inundated by technology? Do you think that teachers who do not use technology can be just as effective as those who do?

  4. That's really great that your teacher is able to use technology in the classroom and see the benefits of it with her classes. This is something I haven't been able to see in my practicum, technology is used more out of class for students to check up on assignments.

I am particularly interested in the teaching method she uses for grammar by having the students correct examples on the board. I agree with you that it is good for students to discuss the rules of grammar that they are learning and following themselves. I think this would be a useful teaching idea that you could submit onto our wiki because it emphasizes the visual and sharing aspect of learning allowing all students to participate in correction and analysis.

  5. Katie, yea I do like how consistent Mrs. D is when utilizing technology in the classroom. I don't think that if there is no technology in classroom that it would hinder the learning process for the students, I just think that that technology that is integrated into the classroom is helpful to a wider range of students who don't learn/retain things with just a basic lecture style type school environment and I think that technology is something that could be beneficial to everyone is used properly.

  6. Fanny-Jo, yea I didn’t even think about using that teaching idea for our wiki I might just do that! Thanks. I am sorry that you haven’t been able to see technology integrated into your classroom. I think that it is a great resource that is beneficial to all students and learning types. But I think that the non use of technology in a classroom is also ok as long as the teacher has other way of reaching their students. As we have learned not only do we learn through sound/ auditory, but visually as well. Visual literacy…something I think needs to also be integrated into the class room.
